Masters Swimming Coach
Coach Doug began competitive swimming in the mid 60’s at the age of six. He was a nationally ranked age group swimmer until he started playing other sports in junior and senior high school. He returned to swimming while in junior college, where I achieved multiple JC All-American rankings at Long Beach City College; Long Beach, Ca.
After a “twenty-six year break”, Doug began masters swimming and competition in 1999. Within two years, he’d achieved multiple USMS rankings and attained one USMS All-American and one FINA "World's Fastest” rank in 2000 (in the Men’s 45-49 age group, 200 meter freestyle.) Doug also achieved many other top ten rankings within USMS and FINA Masters Swimming through 2004.
Several major injuries and resulting surgeries ended his competitive swimming career. Doug now embraces the sport he passionately loves by coaching.
Coach Doug has been a masters swimming coach since 2005. In 2007, he founded South Coast Masters Swimming. Beginning with thirteen swimmers, South Coast Masters has grown to nearly two hundred year round members. South Coast masters conducts sixteen weekly workouts and has a staff of ten coaches. He is also the head swim coach for three Conejo Valley triathlon teams.
Doug is also a swim technique specialist having given well over eight thousand private lessons. Helping clients from Santa Barbara to Arcadia, Doug has worked with hundreds of tri-athletes, water polo players, competitive club, adult beginners and masters swimmers.
Doug specializes in giving clear, understandable instruction matched to each swimmer’s ability level. He provides a progressive drilling method which ensures comfort, safety and improvement, for all swimmers of any ability.
Doug also has a swim video production business. In the past four years, he has produced over four hundred individual swim videos, which include extensive voice over analysis, identification of stroke positives and aspects to be improved upon.
Doug is an active member of United States Masters Swimming, Southern Pacific Masters Swimming, USA Swimming and American Swim Coaches Association. Doug is a USMS/ASCA certified Level lll Masters Swim Coach, a USMS Level l and ll certified masters coaching instructor and ASCA Level lll certified coach. He is also Red Cross Certified in AED, CPR, and First Aide. Your safety is always his foremost concern.
Doug is a recipient of the 2013 United States Masters Swimming Kerry O’Brien Coaches Award, presented annually to the coach who best exemplifies coaching leadership.
All of Doug’s coaching efforts have been aimed at how to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. In short: doing the right things and doing the right things.
